Evaluation

Evaluation

For the second media task we had to come up with ideas, a front cover and a mock up of a contents page all based on a college magazine.
But before we could do all of that we firstly had to make a Google account and create a blog on blogger. My blogger address is dannyrotheryasmedia.blogspot.co.uk.
This is the mock up:

This is my real front cover:
Both the mock up and the front cover are very similar but I have added a few more extra things like an issue date (October 2013). I have added a few more stories and changed the colour of the words ‘FREE’ and ‘WIN A £30 ITUNES VOUCHER. I have done this to make them stand out and hopefully attract more buyers. It is a free magazine with the chance to win a very good prize if you enter a competition.

I believe that my magazine uses quite a few conventions of existing magazines. I have a masthead that is placed at the top of the magazine and is very big and bold. I have a date/issue number that allows the reader to know what issue they are actually reading and have they got the latest magazine.
I also have got a barcode; I have sell lines that relate to my product as well, they are about exam tips, new cafĂ© menu for lunch times and reviews on universities which would be a regular update for my magazine. I have stated in one of my sell lines that ‘this month we look at Hull’.  Graphics are another thing that are included on my front cover, not a lot but there is a big blue circle that has ‘FREE’ inside of it and the footer is just a blue rectangle that has the competition headline inside. I have chosen to include graphics because it fills the page up and it also stands out.
Another thing I have done is I have included most of the sell lines down the left hand side of the page. This is called the sweet spot; when people look at a magazine cover or any other page they look at it in a ‘Z’ shape. They will read the masthead first then move down to the left hand side of the page and finish up at the bottom of the page reading the footer.

The audience for my magazines is for students of Wyke College, both first and second years. It includes stuff that they would find useful like help on exams and reviews of universities.
The front cover model is of a student holding books and looking happy. This could represent students as willing to learn and they are enjoying life at college.

I attract the audience by making certain features of the front cover stand out. The colours of ‘FREE’ and the competition at the bottom are very different to the graphic they are in. This catches the eye and makes them feel like they are more important than the sell lines in white.

Every piece of work that I have done has to be uploaded to a blog. When Tim said we had to create a blog I had a vague idea of what one was but had no idea how to upload and work it. Then once I created one I got the hang of it straight away. I found it easy to upload a photo and write and change to font/font size when creating a blog.
Another thing that I have got the hang of now is using the basics on Photoshop; I can now cut round a person easier and place things over other layers.
Looking back at the perfume task I feel like I have learnt quite a lot. I have learnt that I should focus more on the products outside of school as well not just leave it to lessons. Another thing I have learnt is to make sure I keep up with the work and always should be updating my blog if I have done a piece of work. I should research a lot as well. For the perfume ad I don’t think that I did enough research on existing products and I feel that because I have done a bit more research this time it has really helped me create the finished product.

If I were to do this product again I would spend more time outside of school on it. I should not just leave it quite late to actually get the photos, which I only got last week and quickly made a mock up on Thursday. I would also update my blog more often so I have the stories in order and not in any old order. All of this would help me keep in order and not in a panic on deadline day.
I think that I would change a few things on the front cover now I look at it, like the big blue circle. Maybe I should choose a different graphic instead.

Real Front Cover

This is my real front cover. As you can see it is very similar to my mock up but I have added a few things. I have added a few more stories, I have used the space at the bottom better as well. The text fills up the whole of the space and I have changed the color to make it stand out more. I have also changed the colour of the word 'FREE' to make it stand out as well.
I have added a date to it as well as editing the main image a little better. On the mock up you could still see some of the background near her hair.

Mock Up of Front Cover

This is my mock up of the college magazine.
it is called WYKE STAR. This was just a quick photoshop edit of what the real front cover could look like. The real front cover will look very similar to this mock up. I am going to use the same main image and background but I am going to change the stories around a little bit. I feel as though I need a few more stories and I could of used the space inside the block better by making the writing bigger. I also need a issue number/date.

College Magazines - LIIAR and Conventions analysis

24th September 2013

College magazine

Target Audience - Students, because it is a college magazine and it will include stories and photos that would appeal to a student.

Main Image - The main image is of a student, this will engage the students more and they will relate to the person in the image.

The main image for the front cover will be a medium close up. This shot is usually from around the waist upwards, with a little space above the head. The most common use of this shot is used for the news.

Conventions of a College magazine:

Masthead - COLLEGE

Date - Fall 2010 (issue 11). This makes it easier for the reader to know which issue they are purchasing.

Price - 100% Free. If the magazine is free this could interest more buyers, especially college students.

Barcode - Bottom right hand corner.

Sell lines - ' I SLEPT WITH MY PROFESSOR' These are more or less stories that are relevant with college.

Footer - This magazine does not have a footer.

Skyline - This magazine does not have a skyline. The masthead is where the skyline would be.

The magazine also has a website address under the barcode.

www.collegemagazine.com

Colours - Black, blue and gold. Skin is also used as a colour.

L.I.I.A.R (Language, Institution, Ideology, Audience and Representation)

Language -
The shot used for this magazine is a medium long shot (MLS). You can see the top of his legs all the way up to his head, with enough space to fit the masthead.
The lighting in this shot varies as you look down the page. It goes from very light at the top near his head, to darker near the bottom, you can hardly see his trousers, but there is still enough light to see his hands.
The model for this image look as though he could be against a big blue container. maybe like you would find on a field that held all the sporting equipment. This would fit nicely in with the theme of the magazine which is all about college.

Institution
The brand name for this magazine is just 'COLLEGE'.

Ideology
The messages of the this magazine are: if you get this magazine you are part of the cool gang. The image is cool and he look as though he is a popular kid.

Audience -
This is a college magazine for students, you can tell by the tag lines and obviously the title which is 'College'
I also think that this magazine would appeal to older college students. It has stories with 'I slept with my Professor' and 'celebrate the big 2-1 in Vegas'. It is most probably an American college magazine, their students are older.

Representation -
I feel as though college students are represented as people who like to have that extra responsibility. But don't always do the right thing especially with the article 'I slept with my professor'.

L.I.I.A.R

Language -
The shot used is a medium shot , you can see from her waist up.
The lighting is very bright, with just a plain white background. I feel the front cover itself is very boring. But with the plain background

Institution -
This magazine institution is 'School Weekly'

Ideology -
I feel the magazine's values make school/college look like a very inviting and safe place to be. The girl has a very innocent smile and is holding books. It makes the school seem like a good place to be.

Audience
This magazine is for school students, most probably year 11's. It features pictures from the year 11 prom, results from exams. And the other story about tips for exams could appeal to year 11's moving up to college and also for year 10's who are starting their exams.

Representation
This magazine represents school children as people who are willing to learn, want to be in school and want the best out of their time there. You can tell this because the model is holding books and has direct mode of address making the audience more involved.

Conventions Analysis

Masthead - School Weekly, this is an appropriate name for a magazine being sold in a school/college.

Date - Monday 12th October 2010

Price - This magazine does not have a price on the cover. Most magazines should feature a price so people know how much they are paying.

Barcode - There is no barcode on the front cover. This is also a main convention on a magazine.

Cover line - The main cover line is 'Every Year 11 pupil's GCSE Grades published', this is near the top and is a decent size, big enough to see.. People will want to see their grades and compare them to their friends.
This magazine cover also has stories about tips for exams and pictures from the year 11 prom.
The coverlines are titled in red. nothing else on this magazine is in red

Header - No header or footer on the front cover of this magazine.

Main Image -  Includes a school girl who looks ready to learn and is enjoying her time at the school. Appropriate for the target audience and the fact that it is a college/school magazine.

Colours - Blue, white, red, black, cream. All of the main headlines/sell lines are all in red. This makes them stand out to the audience above the white background and make them seem important.

L.I.I.A.R

Language:
The magazine features a medium shot with the female model and a medium long shot with the male model. I feel the models could of been a little higher on the page, the woman seems a little low.
Lighting, again is bright with a silver background that is a little darker near the bottom.

Institution:
This magazine's name is 'The Griffin', the front cover also has a little image of a griffin in the bottom left hand corner. This is something that the other two magazines didn't have. I feel that this is a good thing to have a logo, it allows the audience to instantly recognise what brand they are using. Like Nike and their tick, Apple and the little bitten apple.

Ideology:
This magazines values make school seem like a very good and intelligent place to be. The models are wearing smart suits and look interested in their learning.

Audience:
This magazine looks as though it is for college students. The stories such as 'School food: Tell us what you think' wouldn't really appeal to parents because they don't eat at college. Students will also be interested in what's going on around them and about helping out the college by recycling and non-uniform day.

Representation:
This magazine represents students of this college as very smart. They are very business like with their suits on. The griffin symbolises wisdom and strength.

Conventions Analysis

Masthead - The Griffin. This title is different to the others, it does not mention that it is a college or school magazine, but the sell lines give you a hint that it is being sold in a college. Sell lines such as: 'School Food: What do you think' and interviews with students about their life in sixth form make it an appropriate magazine to sell inside a school.

Date - Does not have a date or issue number.

Price - Free, this attracts more people to get the magazine because everyone loves a freebie.

Barcode - Does not feature a barcode

Header -  This magazine does feature a header advertising competitions inside the magazine to attract more people to buy it.

Unused Images for front cover

These images were not used on my front cover. The ones were i have used green screen were not used because they gave a green tint on the edge of the model when edited to put on the background.
The background images were not used because I don't think they gave a good representation of a college, apart from the bottom one, I liked the bottom one but I liked the one I used better.

Initial Ideas

Target audience - Students
Genre - College Magazine
Main Image - A student will be my main image, they will be carrying books and smiling looking like they are enjoying their time at the college.
Type of shot - Medium Close-Up (MCU)
Representation - This magazine will represent students, they need to be happy and look as thought they are engaged with the learning environment.
Ideology - Education is fun, it is great and if you are enjoying and learning you could have a great future.

Mock Up of Contents Page

This is just a mock up of what the contents page could look like in terms of where things would go and the layout.
It Features:
Contents into sections (features and regulars)
The Editors words
A sneak Preview of what is in next months issue
Images
Masthead

Conventions of a Contents page

A contents page is very helpful to readers. It gives the reader a list of what is inside that magazine and where to find specific stories or competitions.

Examples of Shot Types (my own images)

Long Shot

The object takes up the entire frame. We get a view of the whole character.

Medium Shot

Shot form a medium distance shoeing more body language and less detail while giving an impression of the whole person.

Medium Close Up

Halfway between medium shot and a close up. More detail of the body language and emotions of the face.

Close Up

This shot tightly frames the person to show very detailed emotions on a face.

Extreme Close Up

Zoomed into a person to show a details of a specific area, mainly the eyes or somebody's hands.

Very wide shot/establishing shot

The person is only just visible. This shot places emphasis on setting the scene and placing the person/character in an environment.

Examples of different shot types (not my images)

Extreme Wide Shot (EWS)

This is a shot so far out that the subject is not visible. The point of this shot is to show the subject's surroundings.  You can also use this shot to establish the location of the shot.

Very Wide Shot (VWS)

The very wide shot is closer to the subject than a extreme wide shot but is still further away than a wide shot.
The subject is only just visible and this shot is all about placing the character in their environment. The audience can then orientate themselves with the surroundings.

Wide Shot (WS)

In a wide shot the subject takes up almost the whole frame. Their feet at the bottom of the shot and their head at the top. But the subject does not take up the width of the frame as this shot is the closest you can get with seeing the whole of the subject. This shot shows us the body language of the subject.

Medium Shot (MS)

This shows a more detailed shot of the subject and is normally from the waist upwards. There is room for hand gestures. The most common use of this shot is in news reports.

Medium Close Up (MCU)

This shot is inbetween a mid shot and a close up. It shows the subjects face more clearly without getting too close.
This shot is usually from the chest to the top of the head.

Close Up (CU)

In a close up a certain part or feature of a subject takes up most of the frame. If a person is the subject in the shot, it usually means that the close up will be of their face. This type of shot really focuses on their emotions.

Extreme Close Up (ECU)

This shot shows extreme detail of the subject. This shot is too close to show emotions or a reaction except in really dramatic scenes.

All of the images I have used are not my own, these are just examples of different types of shots. I will be using my own images on a sperate post.
