Pic Monkey draft of double page spread

Shot Types

These are practice shots that I took during lessons. Each of them are medium close ups of the model. I feel that the folded arms are a good look for a rock genre music magazine the eyes are in direct mode of address making the audience feel involved. The model looks like he is in charge and he has quite a strong look about him. Being strong and in control are conventions of rock

Practice Shots (2/12/13)

This is not a very good shot as you can't see her whole body and you can see the wires on the floor behind her.

These are the practice shots that I used to get used to the framing and the camera.

Pic monkey of Front cover

pic monkey edit of Front cover.
These are not my own images, they are taken from google images in order for me to create my 'Google mock-up'.
I decided to have Queen band member Freddie Mercury as the front cover as he is easily recognisable with the genre of rock.
It still includes the same features as my hand drawn draft but only this time there isn't a header.
I also put a filter on the image to make it look older and more vintage. This fits in with the  a sub-genre of rock, classical rock.

1st draft of double page spread

1st draft of my double page spread. It shows the conventions that a double page will have; such as the page number, the byline, pull quotes and the main image with smaller, secondary images.
In my magazine there will be a whole page dedicated to the main image, making the reader aware of who the article is about visually making it easier to associate the artist with the text.
I decided to have this sort of style because when I looked into existing rock magazines I found that Q had the same style. I liked this approach and decided to adapt for my magazine.

1st Hand Drawn Draft of Front Cover

1st Draft of my front cover.
This is my first hand drawn draft of the front cover. It features conventions such as a masthead, a main image, date and issue number, a barcode and sell-lines.
The main image is going to be of a female model who is wearing black and white clothing with a red lipstick. Looking into the genre of rock it self I found that black clothing (mainly leather) with bright red lipstick is very common. Black is associated with power and mystery. I want the reader to feel when looking at this, that rock is powerful and if they read this and follow rock; they themselves will feel powerful.

Production Plan

For my media project I have to come up with a production plan that will help me complete the front cover, the double page spread and the contents page.
Firstly I am going to start off by drawing up some hand drawn drafts of my front cover, they will be my initial ideas and they will help me expand on what I want to achieve. On doing my hand drawn drafts I will then go and take the necessary photos with the appropriate model(s) in costume, on location and wearing the correct make-up.
After the photos have been taken I can then start to edit them on Photoshop and create some digital drafts of the front cover. I will also be creating all of my front cover, double page spread and contents page on Photoshop going through the same process of drafts then photo shoot and then creating them.
The double page spread however will not need to have a photo shoot because when I take the images for the front cover I will take an image I feel suits the double page spread.

History of Rock

History of Rock - Prezi

This is my Prezi for the history of rock. Rock originated from rock and roll in the 50's in the USA. It then developed into a whole range of different sub-genres and styles in th UK and USA in the 60's.

My Target Audience

Looking at the reader profiles of existing magazines in my genre (Kerrang, Q and Mojo); I will be looking to have a target audience of males aged 15-24. Males in this age range seem to be reading Classic and Modern Rock magazines more than females.

L.I.I.A.R analysis of Existing Rock Magazines

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of Kerrang magazine front cover

Language:
On this front cover the main image is of a rock group called The Blackout; you can tell this straight away by the big bold heading right in the middle of the page titled "The Blackout", this is also in a banner graphic that makes it stand out more to the audience. The type of shot used is a long shot, if yo remove all of the items on the page then you can clearly see the whole of the person in the shot. This type of shot shows the audience the body language of the person, also what Kerrang have done id have the models give direct mode of address and show the whole of their face to the camera, this shows the audience their emotions in their faces.
The lighting and the colours for this front cover are very bright, the use of yellows, reds and bright blue realy catches the eye. But this then juxtaposes with the black that the models are wearing.
The masthead itself also fits in with the genre of rock, it is bold and black (black is associated with the genre of rock because it has an element of power and control about it).

Institution:
The institution of the magazine is Kerrang. Kerrang is one of the most well know and most popular music magazines in Britain. They get sold in almost every newsagents and supermarkets, because of the large scale distribution of the product it is easily accessible, this in turn increases the reader loyalty. Leading into the audience. Having researched the reader profiles of Kerrang I found out that there isnt much of a gap betwen the genders that read the magazine. With 45.3% females and 54.7% male, this shows that the genre rock is becoming more appealing to both genders.

Ideology:
messages of this magazine

Representation:
This Kerrang magazine front cover represents the audience as being mostly male, this is shown by the colours of black, reds and yellows. The dark reds represent leadership, courage and power. It is also a colour that can invite and attract audiences. This front cover also represents the audience as being quite rebellious and ambitious; the sell-line of "We've always behaved like we're playing Wembley" shows this, Wembley is a huge stadium and is often associated with huge music events that bands and artistes dream of performing at. Quite famously the rock band Queen performed at the stadium for the "Live Aid" concert and their tour. Their performances are regarded as some of the best ever at Wembley.

Social Structure of the UK - Wikipedia

The social structure of the UK has been influenced by social-class. This concept still affects the British society today.
Although definitions of social class in the UK varies and is highly controversial, most are influenced by factors of wealth, occupation and education.

In 2001 the UK office for National Statistics produced a new socio-economic classification. The purpose of this is to provide a more comprehensive and detailed classification to take newer employment patters into account.

3 Intermediate occupations  C1 and C2
4 Small employers and non professional and self-employed  C1 and C2

Kerrang Front Cover

This is the front cover for rock magazine Kerrang
The conventions of this front cover include:

  • Main Image
  • Barcode
  • Sell lines
  • The date line
  • The Mast head
  • A header and a footer
  • Graphics
This magazine feels very 'rocky'. The colours are not bright and they are not the colours that you would find on a girly pop magazine. It has edgy and jagged font styles that stand out. Especially the mast head it looks as though it has been smashed, probably by a guitar a common iconography of rock.
I feel as though this front cover appeals more  to males than females because it has a band member from Green Day. I also believe that the editors have gone for more of a male look because the audience members of this magazine are predominantly male.

Key Artists in Rock

These are the Key artists in Rock. Each of these artists have their own unique style and they are nearly all men. The genre of rock has long been associated with the male gender with successful band such as Queen and U2 and artists such as Jimi Hendrix. Historically the male figure has been seen as dominant and powerful but this image has changed over the years and artists like Elton John have shown this.

Queen -

The Beatles -

Jimi Hendrix -

U2 -

The Who -

Rolling Stones -

Elton John -

The XX -

Blur -

Mood board of Classic and Modern Rock

This is my mood board of my chosen genre for my music magazine; Classic and Modern Rock.
There is a mixture of all different types of artists from Elton John and Queen to Green Day and Muse.

Conventions of a Front Cover

Conventions of the magazine
Conventions of a front cover by Danny Rothery on GoAnimate

Front cover:
These are the conventions of a front cover:

  • A Masthead
  • Main sell lines
  • Normal Sell lines that relate to the genre (the stories should be all music related not gossip; Harry Styles has a relationship with a non celeb)
  • A barcode
  • The Issue number/date of the magazine
  • The price, this could be inside a graphic or down near the barcode. Some magazines actually place the price inside a boarder around the barcode to have more space on the cover.

  • A header/footer that involves some information on what is inside the magazine.
  • The main image. This should be related to the genre, it is no point in having a heavy metal magazine and an image of Justin Bieber.
  • Freebies. I believe it is important for a music magazine to include freebies such as a CD or posters. Freebies could increase reader loyalty and make more people want to buy the magazine.

Go Animate video of my genre and current magazines
