Images for Contents Page

Images for 'New Artists' section on Contents Page
The Idea for the new bands/artists section was that i will have a group of females and while taking these images I came up wit the idea that my USP (unique selling point) is that I will have an all female edition magazine. I will add this later to the front cover maybe 'Female Rockers Edition' as a sub heading under the masthead.

This shot has a bit of bad framing on the side with the light still sticking out in the right hand corner. But I like the content, she (the model) is wearing black and looks rather aggressive with the guitar like she is going to smash it up. Smashing a guitar up on stage was seen by Pete Townshend from The Who. I don't think though that I am going to use this image.

Again the framing is rather bad and this shot is not as effective as the image above. The content does not look as aggressive as well. I will not be using this image.

Although the framing is a bit out on the right hand side that can be easily edited out and painted over. Again I like the aggression that the model is showing, I would use this image if I was creating a whole magazine.

Edited pictures:
I have edited the pictures and added a black stage background to make it look like they are on stage.

I cut around the pictures using the magic wand tool. I then added the background and re scaled it so it fitted the whole picture.
The models had a green tint around them so I then erased that using the eraser tool.

I am now trying it with a different image:
Adding the black stage background:
Scaling the background and erasing the green tint:
unfortunately this image didn't go as well as the other image. So I will try the Image with both models for my contents page

First and second Photoshop draft of Contents page

This is the first photoshop draft of my contents page. I have chosen to go with a grey background because I felt that it needed some colour on it. It also needs to have two more images in the boxes above with "24" and "30" on them.

Second draft:

I have changed the main image of the contents page; this image suits the magazine a bit more and it also fills out the space making the image appear larger.
I have also added a new photo to the "24" box. This image is of one of the new bands that will be touring in 2014, to make it look a bit more music I added a stage with lights in the background. What I will have to change for my third draft is the positioning of the "24" because it is covering up the guitar one of the models is holding.

Progression of Double Page Spread

Photos for my DPS
These are the pictures that I can use for my double page spread.

This image is a medium close up of the model. This is one of my favorite images because there is direct mode of address and she also is wearing headphones (an item associated with music). The one problem I have with this image is that she doesn't look like she is associated with the genre of rock as much as I would of liked.

This image has direct mode of address, you can see the detail in the makeup and i like the use of the headphones as props. The shadowing and the fact that her knees are in the shot may be an issue when cropping/cutting the image.

If I were to use this picture I could probably use it for a smaller image to go on the page with the article. This does look as if it would be in a rock magazine and you can really see the details in the makeup and the jagged hair. The only issue really is the framing of the shot; it's not a medium shot that you would conventionally see on a whole page for the DPS and you can't see the top of her head.

This is the image I used for my front cover. Although it is a very good shot I feel that it only resembles the rock genre a little bit; that would be the make-up and the colour of clothing. The model is wearing quite heavy make-up that has been designed on her face to look different to how a 'normal' person would wear theirs. Also the clothing she is wearing is black and white, the colours I knew I wanted to use as a house style.
This is another image that could be used as a smaller image on the second page on the DPS. I like the framing of the shot and the content. There is detail to the makeup and it looks as though she is listening to the music and enjoying it.
This is the image I have decided to use, the framing of the shot is good, MCU and I like the attitude on the models face. The background can be cropped and added to another background, which I am going to do, I found an article in Q that really stood out to me; the artist was on the left hand side of the DPS and then the article was on the right hand side with a big bold heading. The background was also completely red, that is one of the house style colours and I am going to use that!

Cropping The images:
I have chosen an image to cut for the DPS. I have chosen to have a full image on the left hand side of the DPS, I really liked this design when looking through existing magazines such as Q and Mojo.

Image 1:
This is the first image I have chosen, this image was my alternative for the front cover.

I added it to photoshop, then deleted the background to cut the image out and then erased around the hair. I then found some hair at the side of her head that didn't match the rest of the image so I erased that. But because I had erased a piece of hair that was flowing down over her shoulders and onto her chest I then had to use the spot healing tool to get rid of that hair.
After I had cut her out I then created an A3 document that I rotated so I can place my image on for creating my DPS. I pressed Shift and R to enable me to rotate the page.
I then added a line down the middle to distinguish where the fold line will be (I will delete before printing). To enable the line tool I had to select it from one or the shape options down the left hand side. You can't really see the line in this screenshot but it will be much clearer when I add the background colour.
I have now added the image to the DPS. I scaled it so that it would go over the two pages:
Adding the Background colour; I have added a background colour of red, the red that I used for my front cover.
Adding the title and the byline. Because I have rotated the page I have had to rotate all of the writing around.
I got the inspiration from an article in Q.
The article will go below the heading, and I am still undecided as to either have it in columns or to have it read across the page like a book.
I have started to write the article and I have chosen to have it read in columns instead of a book-like article like I found in Q.
Because I have rotated the page, I have had to rotate the writing and adjust it so it fits the style of the page.
I have also added the correct page numbers to the bottom of each page. The left page has the number at the bottom left and the right page has it bottom right.
I have tried to keep the design as simple as possible because I feel it looks more effective. The reds and the blacks in this DPS really stand out along with the white writing. I have chosen to have white font because it's easier to read on the white than black.

Adding the rest of the article:
This is the first finished draft of my DPS. I have finished the article and added a couple of pull quotes. I am very pleased with the way my DPS has turned out, it has turned out as planned.

Location Report for the front cover

For my magazine I didn't have a specific location for the background. I decided that I wanted a white background to make the model stand out more so all I used was my white bedroom wall.
Researching into other magazines the white background is rather effective and that is why I used this.

Front Cover Final Draft

This is my final draft of my front cover. I have change a few things since 2nd draft.2.
I have added a tagline; throughout the process of making/planning my front cover I found it hard to come up with a tagline so I came up with a few rough ideas and created a poll for viewers of blog to vote on what they thought sounded the best. After this my media teacher suggested the title of a Wilfred Owen poem, Anthem for Doomed Youth. I thought that this sounded very good and I stuck with it.
I have also closed the gap between the lines on my sell lines, I have made the graphic smaller in top right hand corner and I have also changed back 'Anthem' back to the original font style.

Tagline Final

The winner was: Anthem - Simply Rock
Unfortunately I have decided that I will not be using any of these tag lines for my final product, and instead will go for the tag line 'Anthem - For Doomed Youth'. This tag line goes quite well with the iconography and ideology of rock; some of the music is quite rebellious and to go against it saying that you are doomed could make audiences feel brave and rebellious knowing that listening to the music you are "doomed".
This tagline is based on the World War One poem by Wilfred Owen, Anthem for Doomed Youth.

Tagline Poll Results

Thank you for submitting your answers for my tag line questionnaire. These are the results for the poll that I created for audience to help me choose a good tagline. As you can see there is only a total of 6 votes, this could mean that I need to introduce new methods of getting audience members to precipitate in activities like this in the future; I can use sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ to do so.
The winner of the poll was, Anthem - Simply Rock with 50% of the votes.
