College magazine
Target Audience - Students, because it is a college magazine and it will include stories and photos that would appeal to a student.
Main Image - The main image is of a student, this will engage the students more and they will relate to the person in the image.
The main image for the front cover will be a medium close up. This shot is usually from around the waist upwards, with a little space above the head. The most common use of this shot is used for the news.
Conventions of a College magazine:
Masthead - COLLEGE
Date - Fall 2010 (issue 11). This makes it easier for the reader to know which issue they are purchasing.
Price - 100% Free. If the magazine is free this could interest more buyers, especially college students.
Barcode - Bottom right hand corner.
Sell lines - ' I SLEPT WITH MY PROFESSOR' These are more or less stories that are relevant with college.
Footer - This magazine does not have a footer.
Skyline - This magazine does not have a skyline. The masthead is where the skyline would be.
The magazine also has a website address under the barcode.
www.collegemagazine.com
Colours - Black, blue and gold. Skin is also used as a colour.
L.I.I.A.R (Language, Institution, Ideology, Audience and Representation)
Language -
The shot used for this magazine is a medium long shot (MLS). You can see the top of his legs all the way up to his head, with enough space to fit the masthead.
The lighting in this shot varies as you look down the page. It goes from very light at the top near his head, to darker near the bottom, you can hardly see his trousers, but there is still enough light to see his hands.
The model for this image look as though he could be against a big blue container. maybe like you would find on a field that held all the sporting equipment. This would fit nicely in with the theme of the magazine which is all about college.
Institution -
The brand name for this magazine is just 'COLLEGE'.
Ideology -
The messages of the this magazine are: if you get this magazine you are part of the cool gang. The image is cool and he look as though he is a popular kid.
Audience -
This is a college magazine for students, you can tell by the tag lines and obviously the title which is 'College'
I also think that this magazine would appeal to older college students. It has stories with 'I slept with my Professor' and 'celebrate the big 2-1 in Vegas'. It is most probably an American college magazine, their students are older.
Representation -
I feel as though college students are represented as people who like to have that extra responsibility. But don't always do the right thing especially with the article 'I slept with my professor'.
L.I.I.A.R
Language -
The shot used is a medium shot , you can see from her waist up.
The lighting is very bright, with just a plain white background. I feel the front cover itself is very boring. But with the plain background
Institution -
This magazine institution is 'School Weekly'
Ideology -
I feel the magazine's values make school/college look like a very inviting and safe place to be. The girl has a very innocent smile and is holding books. It makes the school seem like a good place to be.
Audience -
This magazine is for school students, most probably year 11's. It features pictures from the year 11 prom, results from exams. And the other story about tips for exams could appeal to year 11's moving up to college and also for year 10's who are starting their exams.
Representation -
This magazine represents school children as people who are willing to learn, want to be in school and want the best out of their time there. You can tell this because the model is holding books and has direct mode of address making the audience more involved.
Conventions Analysis
Masthead - School Weekly, this is an appropriate name for a magazine being sold in a school/college.
Date - Monday 12th October 2010
Price - This magazine does not have a price on the cover. Most magazines should feature a price so people know how much they are paying.
Barcode - There is no barcode on the front cover. This is also a main convention on a magazine.
Cover line - The main cover line is 'Every Year 11 pupil's GCSE Grades published', this is near the top and is a decent size, big enough to see.. People will want to see their grades and compare them to their friends.
This magazine cover also has stories about tips for exams and pictures from the year 11 prom.
The coverlines are titled in red. nothing else on this magazine is in red
Header - No header or footer on the front cover of this magazine.
Main Image - Includes a school girl who looks ready to learn and is enjoying her time at the school. Appropriate for the target audience and the fact that it is a college/school magazine.
Colours - Blue, white, red, black, cream. All of the main headlines/sell lines are all in red. This makes them stand out to the audience above the white background and make them seem important.
L.I.I.A.R
Language:
The magazine features a medium shot with the female model and a medium long shot with the male model. I feel the models could of been a little higher on the page, the woman seems a little low.
Lighting, again is bright with a silver background that is a little darker near the bottom.
Institution:
This magazine's name is 'The Griffin', the front cover also has a little image of a griffin in the bottom left hand corner. This is something that the other two magazines didn't have. I feel that this is a good thing to have a logo, it allows the audience to instantly recognise what brand they are using. Like Nike and their tick, Apple and the little bitten apple.
Ideology:
This magazines values make school seem like a very good and intelligent place to be. The models are wearing smart suits and look interested in their learning.
Audience:
This magazine looks as though it is for college students. The stories such as 'School food: Tell us what you think' wouldn't really appeal to parents because they don't eat at college. Students will also be interested in what's going on around them and about helping out the college by recycling and non-uniform day.
Representation:
This magazine represents students of this college as very smart. They are very business like with their suits on. The griffin symbolises wisdom and strength.
Conventions Analysis
Masthead - The Griffin. This title is different to the others, it does not mention that it is a college or school magazine, but the sell lines give you a hint that it is being sold in a college. Sell lines such as: 'School Food: What do you think' and interviews with students about their life in sixth form make it an appropriate magazine to sell inside a school.
Date - Does not have a date or issue number.
Price - Free, this attracts more people to get the magazine because everyone loves a freebie.
Barcode - Does not feature a barcode
Header - This magazine does feature a header advertising competitions inside the magazine to attract more people to buy it.
